Sometimes life can feel stormy. The Bible contains a number of interesting storm stories. The account of the prophet Jonah is one of the Bible’s most familiar. Most attention is given to the surreal description of the rebellious prophet being thrown overboard during a storm where he is swallowed by a great fish in whose belly he lives for three days until he finally agrees to go to Nineveh and prophecy to the people there. When storms break around us there’s a lot to learn.
Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai
Go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it…
But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish…away from the presence of the Lord.
But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea…

Storms in life are inevitable. The first response may be to cry out in fear. But if we have ears, we may discover a surprising peace, a deeper wisdom, and a more binding love.
