Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path.

Proverbs 3:5-6

About a year and a half ago, I was scheduled for a surgical procedure and learned that it was to be robotic surgery. I had to sign all kinds of acknowledgements and agreements (I think that the grandchildren of my new grandson have been pledged as a part of the fine print!) in order for the surgery to take place.

The morning of the surgery, I was lying in the refrigerator they call “pre-op,” regally dressed in a semi-private gown.  No one was with me, they had taken my glasses, and I was pondering the meaning of warmth when the surgeon walked in. He’s a great guy, a strong follower of Jesus (not a member of Peachtree, unfortunately), and we have a good rapport. After greeting me, he sat down and started pecking away at the computer, when I told him, “Hey, Nathan, I have your verse for the day.”

He spun to me, smiling, and asked what it was. “Proverbs 3.5-6,” I said: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct the robot!”

He laughed, then quickly said, “You know, Chuck, I pray all the way through all my surgeries.”

“That’s great,” I said. “But today, would you do it with your eyes open?”

We laughed, and I’m happy to say that the surgery was a great success. I’m still here and still kicking.

But that passage from Proverbs… I wonder sometimes what life would be like if we took God at His word and trusted Him in ALL our ways, instead of in just some of our ways. What would life be like in our neighborhoods, at work, in our families, if we really did trust God—in EVERYTHING?

Oh, we say we do trust God. But do we really? Do we trust God with our children, or do we helicopter over them? Do we trust God at work, or do we try and convince Him that our way is best? Do we trust God to help us deal with that cantankerous neighbor, or do we like the way it feels when we treat him rudely?

What would your life look like, if today—just today—you trusted God with everything?

For Reflection

What are the areas of my life (family, work, relationships, finances, etc.) in which I tend not to trust God?

What is one—just one—of those areas that today alone, I am willing to turn over to God?

Prayer

Lord, I admit that too often I wrest control of my life away from You. Forgive me for that, and help me today—just today for starters—to trust You with my life!  In Jesus’s name, Amen.
